Members of Christ the Lord are active in reaching out to meet the needs of our community. We’ve done projects including building a house with Habitat for Humanity, Thrivent Builds, and Gwinnett County Lutheran Churches; working in hurricane recovery through Bethel Lutheran in Biloxi, and mission trips to Mexico.  We support the Lawrenceville Co-op, the Partners Against Domestic Violence Women’s Shelter, and the senior citizens of our community.

As a congregation, we also send benevolence support to the Southeastern Synod, and to Lutheran Services of Georgia, the ELCA World Hunger Appeal, and Lutheran World Relief. The Peachtree Symphonic Winds and the Peachtree Band of Jazz will be giving a concert to benefit our Lawrenceville Co-Op on March 29, 2012. Light hors d’oeuvres will be served at 7:00 p.m., and the concert will begin at 8:00. A $10 donation per person is suggested, plus they will be collecting canned goods at the door. All money and canned goods will go to the Co-Op.  McKendree United Methodist Church will be hosting the event. They are located at 1570 Lawrenceville Suwanee Road, Lawrenceville, 30043. We Need a Quorum
2012 Annual MeetingThe Annual Congregational Meeting will take place on Sunday, January 29, at 5 p.m. in the Christ the Lord sanctuary. At this meeting, we will vote on the budget, elect new Church Council members and receive the annual report. Be sure to make plans now to attend this important meeting.

Celebrate Our Sanctuary’s 30th Anniversary
Following the business portion of the Congregational Meeting on January 29, we will have the pleasure of hearing the story of Christ the Lord’s early days. In fact, 88 year old Elsie Carpenter is one, of our members, who was there the day they dug the first shovel of dirt. Elsie is a dear lady who served on the Church Council at that time. If you have any interest in the beginnings of our church, this will be a day to remember.As a way to thank God for this house of prayer, we will have a list of small to large chores that need to be completed around the church. You can sign up for them if you feel you are able to help. If you can’t help but would like to make a contribution, we would welcome your financial gifts as well.We are so lucky to have a place to gather as a people of God to worship, learn and have fellowship together. I hope you will put this on your calendar and come out.

Enjoy a Meal after Annual Meeting
Habitat DinnerThe Dinner Club is preparing a soup and sandwich dinner to be served following the annual congregational meeting on Sunday, January 29. The meeting is at 5 p.m. and dinner will follow. Come enjoy a meal with us after the annual meeting. We will be accepting donations to help support the Gwinnett Habitat for Humanity. There is opportunity to renovate existing homes for use as Habitat homes.

Thanks so much to all those who rolled up their sleeves on January 22 for the Red Cross blood drive. Although we didn’t make our goal, we got 37 pints and that will save a lot of lives. Our next blood drive will be April 15. Please keep that date open. Plan to come to church and roll up your sleeve.

The Hills Are Alive with the Sound of …

AUDITIONS!

On Sunday, February 5, at1 p.m., we will be taking auditions for our annual musical. This year we’re doing The Sound Of Music! So bring something to sing (you can sing a cappella or along with a CD), and be prepared to do a cold read. The production is scheduled for April 20, 21 and 22. Don’t miss your chance!

Additionally, we will need lots of help with set design, costumes and stage assistance, so let us know if you’re interested by contacting Laura Bryant.

Emergency Clothing Drive
The clothing mission at Lawrenceville First Baptist Church is in dire need of our help. For the first time in many years, the racks are empty and the shelves are bare at their store. Typically selling clothing for under a dollar or giving them away free to Lawrenceville Co-Op clients, this valuable mission has suffered greatly with our economy. Christ the Lord will sponsor a one-day clothing drive on Sunday, February 5. Clothes of all sizes are welcome, especially for babies and children. Go through your closets and drawers and let’s pull together to care for our community. If you are unable to bring items to church on February 5, donations may be made directly to the store located in the parking lot of the Lawrenceville First Baptist Church.

Donations Needed for March 24 Yard Sale
Yard SaleOnce again the youth are putting on a yard sale on March 24 to supplement the cost of the National Youth Gathering being held this July. We are collecting donations of items for the sale. Household goods, tools, sports gear, toys, yard equipment, bikes, bedding, appliances and furniture are needed. No clothing please. The items may be dropped off at the church on the following Sundays:January 29, February 26 and March 18. If you have large items that need to be picked up, please contact Diane Thomas.

Boy Scouts Needed for Boy Scout Sunday
On Sunday, February 5, we will celebrate Boy Scout Sunday at Christ the Lord. We are looking for scouts of all ages to usher at any of the four services. Whether you are a Tiger, Cub, Webelo or Eagle Scout honor the Boy Scouts by wearing your uniforms and greeting the congregation on Sunday morning.Please sign up to usher on the bulletin board outside the Children’s Ministry office or contact Diane Thomas.

Family Fun NightAll families are invited to join the fun on Friday, February 10, for Family Fun Night. We will enjoy games before dinner, pizza in the fellowship hall and a movie to cap off the evening. So gather your sleeping bags or favorite cushy chair and settle in for an evening of fun. If you would like to attend, please sign up at the door of the Children’s Ministry office or contact Diane Thomas. This exciting Friday evening begins at 6:00 and runs until 9:00. “Dancin’ and Singin’ the Night Away”
Susan Chambers Dance Theatre Company presents “Dancin’ and Singin’ the Night Away” at Gwinnett Center for the Performing Arts, Golden and Silver Fellowship’s February outing! The musical includes vignettes from several Broadway shows. We will attend a 10 a.m.performance on Saturday, February 18, followed by lunch at nearby Marlow’s Tavern. For tickets purchased by January 29, we can get the group rate (for 10 or more) of $13. Individual tickets are $16. Jeannie Ostergaard and Alvera Christensen are the hostesses for this event. Contact Alvera Christensen for tickets, or additional information. Flyers with addresses for Gwinnett Center and Marlow’s are available in the narthex at church.

Habitat Build Dates Set
The dates have been set for Christ the Lord to help with the Habitat for Humanity House. Ten volunteers are needed on February 25. This day will include removing old flooring, siding, and possibly a deck. On May 12, we will need ten volunteers. This will included shoe molding, shelving, and paint touch up. We will also provide meals for approximately 30 people. We have pledged $1,000 towards the cause. Money from the soup and sandwich meal, after the annual congregational meeting on January 29, will go towards this goal. We look forward to a strong response and cannot wait to get started. If you would like to be part of this in any way, please contact the church office.

AFFIRM Registration is Open!

To register online for AFFIRM, held at Berry College June 17 to 22, go to the Christ the Lord’s website.

AFFIRM is a six day, five night youth event of faith, fellowship and friends sponsored by the ELCA Southeastern Synod. Grounded in scripture, AFFIRM offers youth the opportunity to develop discipleship and leadership skills. The AFFIRM community worships everyday and receives Holy Communion. AFFIRM is for youth in Grades 6 through 12. The cost is $375 before May 1, 2012.

As a church, our youth have been participating in this event for over 15 years. However, many of our adults have fond memories of attending when they were youth. This is a camp like no other! Staff and clergy from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America church-wide have visited this event in hopes of having something like this in other synods!

 Men’s Retreat Set for May 4, 5 and 6
Men's Retreat

The dates for the annual men’s retreat have been set for May 4, 5, and 6. If you have never attended this event and would like to learn more about it, please speak with Pastor Mitchell. The retreat leans more in the direction of fellowship than education. We do have a Saturday morning devotional, but much of the time is spent going into Helen, Georgia, fishing, hiking, golfing, eating, hanging at the lodge, corn hole games, seeing who can hit the whiffle golf ball the farthest, bonfires, reading, sleeping away the day and whatever you had in mind to relax. It is a great get away with some awesome guys. Ronnie Casteel was the first one to sign up. If you plan to attend, please let Pastor Mitchell know as soon as possible before the cabins are full.

Where we need help from parents/caring adults:

  • Bring a ‘dish’ to share to help ‘break the fast’ on Saturday at noon.

Friday, March 9th, 8pm – Saturday, March 10th, noon

Fasting begins after breakfast on Friday, March 9th, and ends with our lunch on Saturday, March 10th.  This is a JUICE FAST.  There will be juice provided throughout the event, and youth are invited to bring their own as well (no soda or orange juice).

We will meet at the church on Friday, March 9th, at 8:00pm.

Through fun and fellowship (and hunger) we will open our eyes and hearts to a bigger understanding and awareness of hunger, both in the world and here in our community.

Fasting is a personal commitment.  Your son/daughter will be responsible for his/her own participation.  In other words, we will not be ‘policing’ them to see if they are ‘cheating’ or not.  If your son/daughter is not physically capable of fasting for 30 hours, he or she CAN still participate.

Why this event?  Our hope is that youth will gain a better understanding and awareness of the hunger around them.

There is a voluntary request of $5 per youth to help offset costs.
