Music Ministry

There’s something for everyone!

Music MinistryOur Choir sings both traditional and contemporary music, as do our Men’s and Women’s Choirs. The Men’s and Women’s Choirs are short term commitments who usually sing twice a year.  We are always looking for musicians for the band as well.  If you play handbells or chimes, we have two handbell choirs Rhythm Section and a Children’s Chime Choir ready for you to ring along.  Our Recorder Choir is always looking for new players, and beginners of any age are welcome to join!  We have two Liturgical Dance Teams, one for older youth and adults Aurora Glory Dancers and one for younger children Imagination Dancers.  We also perform a musical annually.  Some past shows were “Annie”, “The Wizard of Oz”, “Godspell”…and the list goes on!

Enjoy a Taste of Sunday’s Music

As you can see, the Music Ministry is always up and running with something fun and exciting.  There truly is a place for everyone! Here’s a taste of some of the Music to Enjoy you’ll hear on Sunday. For more information or to join in the fun contact Laura Bryant, Director of Music Ministry.

Annual Spring Musical

A full musical is performed each spring. Productions such as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Annie, Godspell, and The Sound of Music are just a few of our performances to date. This is always a favorite activity that involves actors of all ages! We also perform a play each fall. Our most recent performances were “Harvey”, “You Can’t Take It With You”, and “A Higher Place In Heaven”. Take a look at our gallery of pictures from previous productions.

Aurora Glory Dancers

liturgical-danceDance in worship has existed since the time of David;

David danced before the LORD with all his might”, 2Samuel 6:14.  The Bible invites us to “praise his name in the dance: let them sing praises unto him with the timbrel and harp”, Psalm 149:3.

Liturgical, Praise or Worship Dance involves a personal expression of faith and interpretation of the word.  Through the dancers’ movements, the congregation visually experiences an inspired  interpretation of the liturgy and church music.  Worship dancers are called by God to be His instruments, and they dance for an audience of One.

Our Aurora Glory Dancers express their faith and worship through beautiful dance and wonderful costumes. They rehearse on Thursdays at 5:30 pm. Also included in our dance ministry are the Imagination Dancers, comprised of school-aged children. They usually perform quarterly and meet on Sundays at 11:00 am.

The Aurora Glory Dancers present worship dances during the 9:00 and 10:00 services one Sunday each month during the fall and spring.  They also present several dances during CTL’s annual Advent Program, which is typically the first Sunday evening in December.

Ms. Martha is a missionary with Christ the Lord Lutheran Church and has been involved with dance and musical theater since the age of 5.  Martha and her husband John have been members of CTL since 1997.  In 2000, Martha founded the Aurora Glory Dancers at CTL, and has danced regularly ever since in church services, nursing homes and weddings.  By day, Martha is a scheduling coordinator at Georgia Gwinnett College.  She has 3 grown sons and one grandson, Aden, who lives in Boston, MA.

Choirs

choirOur Choir rehearses each Wednesday at 7:00 pm and offers their musical gifts in worship, offering both contemporary and traditional music. The Men’s Choir and our Women’s Choir meet two or three times a year and prepare great music! Watch the bulletin for dates and times. We also have a Men’s Quartet that meets a few times a year

Handbell Choirs

handbells

We have something for every ringer with our Handbell and Chime Choirs! Our Handbell Choir practices on Sunday mornings at 11:00 and we’re happy to welcome new ringers! We also welcome our school children to join our Children’s Chime Choir. They too practice on Sunday mornings at 11:00 and are always looking for more chimers!

The CTL Rhythm Section is a beginning level handbell choir with no previous music experience necessary.  Your interest in learning to ring handbells and read music is your ticket to join. We begin in the Fall with the basics, and build on them through the year, demonstrating our progress at several church services and a Christmas program performance.  Youth, men and women are all invited to learn together in an easy-going, friendly setting.

Ruth Olson, husband Lee Olson, and children Eric and Sally have been members of CTL for so long she does not remember.  Ruth spends her days working as a horticulturist in Buckhead, and most nights in one Music Ministry rehearsal or another.  Ruth learned to ring handbells at their previous Lutheran church in Naperville, IL and happened to make the comment to the Director of Music Ministry Laura Bryant that she missed that aspect of her church experience here at CTL.  Well, what do you know but a few months later a set of handbells appeared at church, and the rest is history.  Ruth enjoys sharing the gift of music with any and all who are interested.

Recorder Choir

recordersThe CTL Recorder Choir started a few years ago to provide another dimension to the Music Department.  Our plan is to teach those who want to learn an instrument as well as be an outlet for those who already play recorders.  We try to add a different element to the Music Department focusing on more classical music, but we do have fun with other music genres as well during practice.  We are always willing to work with beginners.  We have music and instruments for anyone interested in joining.

Our director, Darlene Swaim met her husband, David Swaim, at the Atlanta Recorder Society way back when, so recorders have always had special meaning for them.  A couple of years after getting married and having their daughter, Kat,  they joined Christ the Lord. Darlene helped out with crafts for FOF and VBS while her daughter was growing up, but then was drawn into the Music Department (most likely highjacked by Laura). Besides directing the Recorder Choir, she can be seen helping/performing with the musicals, singing in choir, dancing and occasionally playing the flute.

Christ the Lord is quite proud of our Recorder Choir, which meets weekly. Check bulletin for rehearsal times. Whether you are a beginner at recorder or more experienced, we invite you to join us. It’s a wonderful choir for the whole family.
