High School Youth and Parents:  We Are Celebrating!

Youth GroupThings are always changing around the church, and Youth Ministries is so excited about the following that we want to celebrate!First on Sunday, February 12, at 5:30 p.m., we will experience our amazingly talented youth worship team as they lead us in an all new “learning through worship”! Afterwards, we invite you to come back to the fellowship hall for some dessert and get acquainted (or re-acquainted) with our new High School Youth Director, Keith James. Keith is looking forward to meeting all of you and working with our youth. He is already on staff at AFFIRM this summer! So join us on February 12 as we continue to support our youth and our newest addition to the Youth Ministry Team.

If you plan on joining us for dinner at 5 p.m., please RSVP to Vickie Davis so that we can plan our meal accordingly.

Dear Church Family,Thank you so much for giving so generously to our clothing mission this past month. We sent out an appeal that our clothing supply had gotten low, and you people gave over one-hundred bags of clothing. Your assistance has helped us to continue to serve our community and meet needs of others. We are able to minister to literally hundreds of individuals and families through our clothing ministry here at Lawrenceville First Baptist Church.Blessings,

Inman J. Houston

You can learn more about these opportunities at the volunteer orientation sessions, held on the third Thursday of each month at the Co-Op (176 Church Street, near the Lawrenceville City Hall). This month’s volunteer orientation is scheduled for Thursday, February 16, at 7 p.m. (Advance registration is NOT required.) If you have questions or wish additional information, contact Christ the Lord member and Co-Op Board member Sandra Gustavson.

The Season of Lent: Making Sense of the Cross

Lent 2012This year’s Wednesday evening Lenten services will focus upon the cross. My thoughts will come primarily from a book by David Lose called Making Sense of the Cross. I invite you to purchase his book and read along with me.This year’s Wednesday evening Lenten services will focus upon the cross. My thoughts will come primarily from a book by David Lose called Making Sense of the Cross. I invite you to purchase his book and read along with me.The cross has had many different meanings and uses by the Christian church over the centuries. Teachers of the faith have discussed for ages what was its purpose, why did God choose this way of dying, should we follow the same path, and many, many more questions.

Lose suggested developing an understanding of the cross shapes how we think about God, grace, redemption, etc. This adventure into the word of God should prove to be very fruitful to our spiritual lives and give us a deeper meaning into God’s love for us.

The beginning of my reflections will start on Ash Wednesday, February 22, at 7:30 p.m. The following five Wednesdays (February 29, March 7, 14, 21, and 28) at 7 p.m. we will continue our Lenten services. I hope that you will join me and others as we explore the deep wonders and mysteries of our beautiful faith together.

Shampoo and Soap Drive for
the Lawrenceville Co-Op

The personal care shelves are bare at the Lawrenceville Co-Op, and Christ the Lord is having a shampoo and soap drive to help fill them. From now through February 26, please bring in a bottle of shampoo and/or a bar of bath soap (preferably not travel size – each item has to last a family for a whole month) and place them in the marked bins in the narthex at church. Watch the weekly bulletins for reminders and more details. Christ the Lord is known for their generous response to requests for help – let’s keep up the good work! Also, the Co-Op needs money to help people with utility bills and prescription drugs. Please consider adding $1, $5 or more every time you write an offering check and earmarking it for the Co-Op. If everyone gives just a little, it will add up to help a lot of people! This is another opportunity to show we are truly Caring People Caring For People.

Join Thousands of Others at
Annual Hunger Walk March 11

2012 Hunger WalkJoin thousands of other Atlantans on March 11 and help relieveJoin thousands of other Atlantans on March 11 and help relieve hunger. The Lutheran Church, under the direction of Lutheran Services of Georgia, is one of the largest participants of this program. Lutheran churches have some friendly rivalry to see who can have the most representatives from their congregations. While we have not been in the top three in the last couple of years, we are rapidly climbing up the charts, under the supervision of our grand leader, Arnie Kraby. The walk is only a mile and a lot of fun and laughter is had along the way. Some young ones and older ones choose to run, entertaining cheerleaders and bands are along the side of the road as we walk, and food is sold to charge up the hungry.Walkers are asked to get sponsors or make a donation. Money is split between the Atlanta Food Bank, Lutheran Services of Georgia and our Lawrenceville Co-Op. Come on out and have a blast with friends and strangers and help feed the hungry as you do. Pick up a packet of information on the display table in the narthex at Christ the Lord.

Sign Up for 30-Hour Famine Lock-In!

The 30-Hour Famine Lock-In is for youth in grades 6th through 12th and begins 8 p.m. Friday, March 9, through 12 noon March 10. Fasting begins after breakfast on Friday, March 9, and ends with our lunch on Saturday, March 10. This is a JUICE FAST. There will be juice provided throughout the event, and youth are invited to bring their own as well (no soda or orange juice). We will meet at the church on Friday, March 9, at 8 p.m. There is a voluntary request of $5 per youth to help offset costs. Friends are welcome! Contact Keith James or Vickie Davis to sign up.Fasting is a personal commitment. Your son/daughter will be responsible for his/her own participation. In other words, we will not be ‘policing’ them to see if they are ‘cheating’ or not. If your son/daughter is not physically capable of fasting for 30 hours, he or she CAN still participate.

Where we need help from parents/caring adults:

  • Help chaperone overnight at the church
  • Bring a ‘dish’ to share to help ‘break the fast’ on Saturday at noon.

Why this event? Our hope is that youth, through fun and fellowship (and hunger), will gain a better understanding and awareness of the hunger around them both in the world and here in our community.

Registration Forms for All Georgia are
Available Online

It’s almost time for our annual retreat at the 2012 All Georgia Lutheran Youth Gathering, April 27 through 29!  Our youth from Christ the Lord have been enjoying this event for over 15 years! This year All Georgia comes closer to home and is back at the FFA Retreat Center in Covington.

As the name implies, it is a retreat for youth throughout the state of Georgia, in grades 6th through 12th. Our church youth will travel together and will be staying together in cabins, so this is an easy get together for those youth who may not have been with us on any retreats yet. It begins Friday night and ends on Sunday morning. Registrations can be found outside Vickie Davis’ and/or Keith James’ offices, or you can find them online. Cost is $75 for youth. There is no cost for adults!

AFFIRM Registration is Open!

To register online for AFFIRM, held at Berry College June 17 to 22, go to the Christ the Lord’s website.

AFFIRM is a six day, five night youth event of faith, fellowship and friends sponsored by the ELCA Southeastern Synod. Grounded in scripture, AFFIRM offers youth the opportunity to develop discipleship and leadership skills. The AFFIRM community worships everyday and receives Holy CommunionAFFIRM is for youth in Grades 6 through 12. The cost is $375 before May 1, 2012.

As a church, our youth have been participating in this event for over 15 years. However, many of our adults have fond memories of attending when they were youth. This is a camp like no other! Staff and clergy from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America church-wide have visited this event in hopes of having something like this in other synods!

If you have any questions, contact Vickie Davis.

 Men’s Retreat Set for May 4, 5 and 6

Men's Retreat

The dates for the annual men’s retreat have been set for May 4, 5, and 6. If you have never attended this event and would like to learn more about it, please speak with Pastor Mitchell. The retreat leans more in the direction of fellowship than education. We do have a Saturday morning devotional, but much of the time is spent going into Helen, Georgia, fishing, hiking, golfing, eating, hanging at the lodge, corn hole games, seeing who can hit the whiffle golf ball the farthest, bonfires, reading, sleeping away the day and whatever you had in mind to relax. It is a great get away with some awesome guys. Ronnie Casteel was the first one to sign up. If you plan to attend, please let Pastor Mitchell know as soon as possible before the cabins are full.

Check it out!
